How To Deal With Haters On Periscope

Recently, during the 2015 National Night Out, I used the Periscope app to showcase the many great displays, people, businesses and attendees of this hugely successful event. Held in several cities on the first Tuesday in August, members of the law enforcement community, residents and business owners get together to stand against crime.

The Haters Were Awakened

Our first couple of live video streams didn't bring out any haters, however, once they caught wind what we were doing, the first fire-alarm tones were sounded, and haters were dispatched to our presence on Periscope. I say it in this manner because that's what it felt like.

I can't even imagine the type of person you have to be to be in a constant state of readiness to spew hatred and vile comments, at a moment's notice. Obviously, as a cop, it doesn't surprise me.

Past Experience

I've been down this road before with haters on Periscope. Just like in the academy and military boot camp, I was forced to continue on with doing a live video stream, while the haters comments scrolled up on the screen. I literally felt like I was being tested.

The sad part about this was the fact that the members of our community had legitimate questions to ask, which were hindered and buried amongst the haters' comments. It clearly took everything I had to muddle through the hater's comments and read the quick-flowing legitimate questions or comments.

Now granted, any law enforcement representative is going to do their best to not show negative emotion, as this would let the Haters know their tactics were working. If you do that, you'll simply fuel the fire.

The Human Tripod

Here is the technique I came up with, which is extremely simple to use:

  1. Simply turn the phone around, so you can't see the comments and you can only see the camera lens. 
  2. Have an assistant read the comments and sift through the negative ones and the positive ones. Your job is to talk on camera, and the assistant's job is to stare at the screen.
  3. If a legitimate comment or question comes on the feed, the assistant writes it on a whiteboard and holds it up so you can address the question or comment.
  4. Have the assistant flash their hand when hearts are flowing, so you can thank followers for their hearts.

This technique works great with one assistant but better with a second. If you have two assistants, the first assistant can simply manage the phone, while the second one can read and write the comments and questions.

Is It Effective?

We did about 13 live video streams in a period of about 2 hours. The total length of time online was 38 minutes.

With such heavy use of Periscope, our haters had plenty of opportunities to play their silly games. However, the haters quickly vanished after about the third or fourth broadcast. Since I continued speaking without missing a beat and interacting with the good comments and hearts, it was pretty evident that I had turned the tables on them.

They simply got bored and bailed on us, probably to go attack someone else (sorry for whoever that might be).

Since our haters virtually vanished after trying in vain to attack, I would have to say this technique is solid.

Haters Can't Find A Way Around This Technique

Sometimes, explaining on the internet how to counter-act something will cause the problem instigators to work overtime in an effort to thwart your solution.

Fortunately for us, haters can't get around this technique. I guess you could call our assistants writing down the questions the greatest SPAM filters to walk the planet.
